We are in year 1 of district program improvement. We are trying to find ways to create intervention sections for our students. One of our solutions is to remove our Health Ed course (called survival skills) and our Computer Lit. course as a graduation requirement. This would free up at least 6 sections in a high school of about 900 students.
What are some of your solutions?
Hi John. Missed you at the CLMS conference. My middle school is PI 3, the district is also PI 3 and has a DAIT support group. The middle school lost most of its electives, except for students who are proficient or advanced, or 1 after school band class. Health had previously been taught in the elective wheel. However, with that gone, and John Albert, principal, wanted to teach it in PE. The PE classes were 50+ per section and the only room available was the MPR. So, after checking with several other schools on how they taught Health, we were going to teach it through the Science classes. However, the curriculum leaders decided they would teach it during their Intervention classes after CSTs were completed. In order for any of this to work at a high school you would have to scrap the requirement for Health on a transcript and as a graduation requirement.
